DTI Expands Workforce Training Under SkillsUpNet PH Phase 2

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has launched Phase 2 of SkillsUpNet Philippines (SUN PH) to enhance workforce training in high-growth industries. The program aims to provide specialized skills to Filipino workers, improving employability and competitiveness.
Phase 2 builds on the first phase, which trained over 1,500 workers from June 2021 to December 2023. This expansion includes targeted training in creative industries such as animation, agri-based industries like coffee and bamboo production, as well as renewable energy, electric vehicles, advanced manufacturing, robotics, solar energy, logistics, supply chain management, information technology and business process management, construction, and tourism.
The program, implemented in partnership with the Asian Development Bank and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, provides competitive grants to networks of 10 local enterprises. These employer-led networks collaborate to train workers in various regions.
“We need to develop specific skills. We can no longer remain on the general side because it is difficult for them to find jobs without specialized expertise. Thus, this effort focuses on enhancing worker skills, in line with the core of the Philippine Skills Framework—an initiative led by our Department,” said Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual.
The Philippine Skills Framework aligns with the Philippine Qualifications Framework by defining industry-specific skills and competencies. According to Pascual, this approach ensures that training programs match global job market demands, making Filipino workers more competitive internationally.
Under President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s Bagong Pilipinas Agenda, DTI emphasizes the importance of a skilled workforce for economic growth. “Let us all work together to contribute to strengthening the skills of the Filipino workforce, preparing them to conquer the thriving and emerging industries both locally and globally,” Pascual added.
The DTI-Philippine Trade Training Center leads the program’s implementation, supported by the Resource Generation and Management Service. Regional focal persons coordinate efforts to ensure smooth execution across the country. (ASC)
