DPWH to Conduct Road Safety Audit in SRP
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-7 will be conducting a road safety inspection at the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) following an accident last April 4 where a Ceres bus going to Cebu City rammed a center island in Talisay City.
There were no casualties in the said accident.
Cebu Provincial Traffic Management Focal Person Jonathan “Joy” Tumulak said that after learning about the incident, Cebu Governor Hilario P. Davide III instructed him to set a meeting with DPWH District Engineer of Cebu 2nd District Engineering Office Leslie Anthony Molina, to discuss mechanisms that would help address accidents in the said area.
In an interview, Tumulak said the public works department will deploy personnel to investigate the causes of these mishaps that include an inspection of road signage and other precautions.
“Willing ang DPWH na mo conduct og road safety audit. Kani na audit will investigate the causes of accidents in the area like the mounting of clear speed signs,” Tumulak said.
According to Tumulak, Molina suggested to mount rumble strips in the area. These series of raised strips across a road will produce noise in the vehicle’s tires and will warn drivers of speed restrictions.
For his part, Tumulak said there is a need to repaint center islands in the area to make it visible for motorists.
He added that there is also a need to check the subsidence level and height dimensions of these islands that is now slowly shifting downwards due to asphalting.
“In my own assessment, kanang height sa center island is violative na sa road safety manual. Di na hapit makita gumikan sa sige’g abuno og aspalto,” Tumulak said.
Although DPWH did not make known the date of its investigation, Tumulak said that he will constantly make a follow-up meeting with Molina.
Moreover, to prevent accidents, Tumulak urges LGUs, specially Talisay City, to deploy traffic constables in their area.
