The 665-lineal meter bridge that is seen to support livelihood and tourism in the southern part Ilocos Sur has been completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

DPWH Region 1 Director Ronnel Tan said the P273 million Sugpon Bridge along Alilem-Sugpon-Sudipen Road in the municipality of Sugpon has already been opened to the motoring public in time for the Lenten Season.

“The newly-built Sugpon Bridge which is designed as an all-weather bridge now allows safer and faster link between the town of Sugpon, Ilocos Sur to the outer towns of La Union, crossing Amburayan River. The local residents and tourists won’t have to resort to small boats or raftsjust to cross the river during rainy season,” said Director Tan.

“Prior to the construction of the bridge, Amburayan River is only passable during dry season and jeepneys are required to have dual operated system to be able to overcome the loose portions of the riverbed,” added Director Tan.

Sugpon Bridge project involves the construction of a pre-stressed concrete girder deck slab bridge with 19 spans, and 4.5 lineal meters of carriageway. It also has flood control component, slope protection, and embankment protection. (DPWH)
