DOT Launches First Muslim-Friendly Cove in Boracay to Promote Inclusive Tourism
The Department of Tourism (DOT) launched Marhaba Boracay, the island’s first Muslim-friendly cove, on September 10. Located at the Boracay Newcoast private beach, it caters to Muslim travelers and families, offering a space that aligns with Islamic laws.
DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco praised the collaboration between the Local Government of Malay, Megaworld Hotels, and other partners. She emphasized Boracay’s importance as a key destination for sustainable and inclusive tourism.
“This initiative shows our commitment to making the Philippines a destination for everyone,” said Frasco. She also highlighted the need for Muslim-friendly facilities to attract international visitors.
The launch featured a five-course Halal degustation and the Halal-certified kitchen of Savoy Hotel. Malaysia’s Ambassador to the Philippines, Dato Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, and Brunei’s Ambassador Megawati Haji Manan attended the event.
Boracay’s Muslim community expressed gratitude for the initiative, aiming to attract more tourists from countries like Brunei, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
This project follows the Philippines’ recognition as an emerging Muslim-friendly destination in 2023. The DOT continues accrediting Muslim-friendly establishments nationwide as part of its inclusive tourism efforts. (ASC)
