The Department of Science and Technology Region I (DOST-1) calls on interested students to apply for the Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) until April 26, 2019.

According to Venus Andaya, Science Research Specialist I from DOST-1, JLSS is a program under the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).

“The program caters to talented and deserving students” Andaya said.

She informed that the JLSS program can be availed of by regular second year and incoming third year college students who are pursuing degree programs in Science and Technology (S&T) priority courses namely all engineering courses, Information Technology, and medical courses such as Pharmacy, Medical Technology, Medical Sciences, Psychology, among others.

Said scholarship program is implemented under the Republic Act No. 2067 or the Merit Scholarship Program, R.A. No. 7687 or the “S&T Scholarship Act of 1994,” and R.A. No. 10612 or the “Fast-Tracked S&T Scholarship Act of 2013.”

“Scholars under the RA 10612 are expected to teach as their return-service and in support to the K-12 law,” said Andaya during the Kapihan sa Ilocos of the Philippine Information Agency recently.

Meanwhile, she said graduate-scholars under the RA 7687 and RA 2067 are required to work along their fields of specialization in the country for a period equivalent to the length of years they benefitted from the program.

JLSS grants scholars various benefits to include tuition and other school fees, book allowance, transportation allowance, monthly living allowance, and clothing allowance.

In 2018, Andaya said there were 41 JLSS scholars from Region 1.

“This year, we encourage interested applicants not to wait for the deadline date on April 26 and file their application earlier,” said Andaya.

Qualifying examination is set on June 2, 2019.
