The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) promotes a “human-centered” approach to workplace safety, balancing technology with worker well-being. This was highlighted at the third Occupational Medicine Week on March 17, 2025, in Quezon City.

The Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC), an agency under DOLE, led the event with the theme “Digital Technology in Occupational Medicine Practice.” The discussions focused on how technology can help prevent and treat work-related illnesses and injuries.

OSHC Executive Director Engr. Jose Maria S. Batino, speaking on behalf of DOLE Undersecretary Atty. Benjo Santos M. Benavidez, said that this initiative aligns with international labor standards that promote decent work for all.

Technology’s Role in Workplace Safety

The event featured discussions on how digital tools can improve occupational safety and health (OSH) services. Key topics included:

  • Digitizing OSH reports through the DOLE Online Compliance Portal.
  • Using digital technology to process employee compensation claims.
  • Promoting OSH awareness through social media.

Experts from different agencies participated in the discussions, including Atty. Alvin B. Curada from the Bureau of Working Conditions, Atty. E. Patrice Jamaine T. Barron from the Employees’ Compensation Commission, and Dr. Anna Sofia Victoria S. Fajardo from the Philippine College of Occupational Medicine.

Collaboration for Safer Workplaces

Executive Director Batino highlighted the importance of working together to balance technological advancements with worker safety. He urged stakeholders to cooperate in managing workplace risks while ensuring ethical and safe policies are in place.

He also pointed out the growing need to address work-related health issues such as muscle and joint problems, heart diseases, stress, and mental health concerns. These issues are becoming more common due to new work arrangements shaped by technology.

Webinar Series on Digital Safety

After the event, a webinar series will take place on March 20-21, 2025. The sessions will cover:

  • Digital tools for workplace safety.
  • Online reporting of safety incidents.
  • Innovations in employee benefits and social health insurance programs.

Representatives from the Social Security System (SSS), Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), and other agencies were also present to support the initiative. Through these efforts, DOLE aims to create safer and healthier workplaces while embracing digital transformation. (ASC)
