NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, June 13 (PIA6) —- As part of the commemoration of the country’s 120th Independence Day, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-6) distributed livelihood assistance amounting to PhP2-million to its beneficiaries in Negros Occidental.

Some 53 bamboo craft makers from Barangay Buenavista, Murcia were given a bamboo craft livelihood project worth PhP1-million to purchase machines necessary for bamboo production.

According to lawyer Johnson Cañete, DOLE-6 regional director, Murcia is noted for its bamboo and these small-scale bamboo craft makers need help to further augment their products.

Another financial grant worth PhP1-million was allocated to the 100 senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and farmers of Barangay San Isidro, EB Magalona for the implementation of the rice trading and carabao raising project.

“They have submitted a proposal. A site validation was conducted and we saw that the proposal has return of investments which can help them. Remember it is a grant. They need not to pay back the government but all they have to do is to liquidate the amount that is given to them,” director Cañete underscored.

Cañete disclosed that every year DOLE is holding the Search for the Best Livelihood Program. Entries on the said competition are the beneficiaries of DOLE’s various livelihood projects implemented. Winners receive around PhP50-thousand to PhP500-thousand which can be utilized as project capital.

The regional director likewise assured that DOLE has allotted funds for the livelihood projects every year.

Cañete added that for 2018, more than PhP60-million funding was allocated for the livelihood programs of DOLE in Western Visayas. (LTP/LML-PIA6 Negros Occidental)
