DOH: Let’s Patronize Generics

The month of September is considered as “Generics Month”, so the Department of Health (DOH)7 is deemed to celebrate it, and urging everybody to always symphatize the generics, said Dr. Sophia Mancao of DOH7.

Mancao emphasized the importance of patronizing the local products rather than the imported ones, if both of them are found to have the same effect.

Mancao was talking about Republic Act (RA) 6675 or the generics law which requires all medical practitioners to strictly introduce it to the public especially to their patients.

Mancao said the generics law requires its adequate distribution not only to the poor but even to the wealthy patients the knowledge about the generics.

She said generics medicines are manufactured purposely to aid poor patients who are suffering from ordinary illness to some cancerous diseases.

She explained that drugs which are generics in origin were recognized and scientifically discovered to have the same effect with that of the imported ones.

Mancao also pointed out that the generics law basically directed doctors to prescribe it at all times to all their patients, and at the same time instructed pharmacists to dispense it to their customers.

“It is just a matter on explaining to the poor that imported medicines are just effective as that of the generics, to help them out of their their limited money”, she said.

As part of the celebration of the generics month, all medical practitioners are required to promote the generics in all aspects of their functions, either in the hospitals or even in their private clinics, according to Mancao.
