DJ Gary “GFlip” Bonita Seeks to Claim Championship at Red Bull 3Style Finals

Six finalists have been selected for the upcoming Red Bull 3Style Philippine Finals. They have been selected by a panel of international DJs on skill, originality, and music selection. The winner of this year’s exciting edition of 3Style will go on to represent the country at the World Finals in Krakow, Poland.

Gary “GFlip” Bonita is an open format Turntablist from Villasis, Pampanga and began his career in 2012. As a member of the SicBeatz Crew, Bonita has been leaving a mark in the world from Manila to the streets of Okinawa, Japan.

QUESTIONS:

1. How did you find out about Red Bull 3Style? What can you say about Red Bull 3Style?
I was in looking up DJ mixes in Youtube then I saw a video of DJ doing some cool stuff. I forgot who he was but he was doing something I like, so I started practicing. I feel like Red Bull 3style helps me get motivated to be better. You have to know how to rock party and how to play the song with style.

2. How did you prepare/execute your submission?
I collect ideas and figuring out what songs should I play. I listen to the songs thoroughly and make it work the way I wanted to be. Once I’m done with it, I pick the best routines I think that would qualify me to the competition and practice it multiple times until I perfect it.

3. How are you preparing for the national finals?
First, I collect ideas from listening to songs that I think I can use for 3style competition. I analyzed it by listening on how I’m gonna do to execute the routine. Once I finish everything, I perform the routine and practice it multiple times until I perfect. Then, I ask my DJ friends for second opinion. Shoutout to DJ Dokio for helping me out. Also, I am honing my scratching skills as part of my routine when I practice.

4. What inspired you to become a DJ?
When I was in UK, I met my mentor DJ Dokio. He was the one that got me hooked on Djing. I love how he rocked a party.

5. What sets you apart from other DJs in the competition?
I think my versatility that sets me apart from other DJs in the competition.

6. What are your top three favorite albums?
I like all the albums I listen too. It is hard to rank them from 1 to 3.

7. What’s a song you absolutely hate and why?
I don’t have any song that I hate at the moment.

8. How do you think Red Bull 3Style help aspiring DJs?
In my case, Red Bull 3style helps me to go another level. Also, it motivates you to be a better DJ.
