Digital Services in PH to Continue to Boom Post-Pandemic

As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pushed Filipinos inside the safety of their homes for a good part of 2020, and with some parts of the country placing their areas under lockdowns again in 2021, people relied heavily on digital services to get through their day.

Heavy usage of digital services such as digital wallets, online marketplaces, online food delivery services, online banking, and others, sparked a digitalization boom that the country will see growth even after the pandemic ends.

According to Unionbank Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resource Officer Michelle Rubio in a virtual briefing Wednesday that digital tech and apps will constantly be part of our lives moving forward.

“Digital technologies and applications will still be very much part of our lives and it will only continue to improve as we release more innovations and adapt into the digital world,” she said.

Different companies are now realizing the importance of digital services. Unionbank has been one of the first in the banking industry to shift mindsets to digitalization, as they currently offer one of the most seamless mobile banking apps in the industry today in the Philippines, one where the UI/UX is top notch.

AirAsia Philippines, acknowleding the growth of digitalization, also recently announced a partnership with GCash, a leading digital wallet provider in the country.

GCash also reported massive growth in 2020, reporting over 33 million new user registered in the platform, 65 percent higher than the 20 million registered users in 2019. The digital wallet also reported reaching a transaction value of PHP1 trillion, with daily gross transaction value peaking at PHP7.5 billion. (GFB)
