DepEd Issues Moratorium on Field Trips

The Department of Education (DepEd) will issue a moratorium on educational tours in all public elementary and secondary schools until June, following the tragic bus accident in Tanay, Rizal that claimed the lives of several students of Bestlink College.

According to a news release issued by the department late Wednesday, the decision was reached during a meeting between Education Secretary Leonor Briones and regional directors.

The department said the moratorium would enable them to review existing policies and harmonize the implementing details of regions.

It said the review will align field trips with learning outcomes, security and safety, and responsibilities and accountabilities, not only of schools but also of parents and other relevant government agencies.

The department however said that schools that have already obtained permits and awarded contracts may continue their scheduled field trips but should comply with existing guidelines on safety.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) issued a similar moratorium on Tuesday, which was filed by CHED commissioner Prospero de Vera at the en banc. (PNA)CVL/JLD
