DENR7 Calls LGUs to Raise Awareness on Landslide, Flood

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 is calling the local government units (LGUs) to inform the public on geological hazards on their respective areas.

The purpose of which, according to DENR 7 Regional Executive Director Isabelo Montejo, is to prepare the public especially those living in landslide- and flood-prone areas.

“It is highly important that our people should know how to respond to certain disasters,” Montejo said. Montejo said it is imperative that LGUs continuously inform their constituents of the hazards of heavy rains, especially that these usually brought heavy flooding and landslide like what was recently experienced by Bayawan City in Negros Oriental wherein hundreds of families were displaced.

“There is now an urgent need for LGUs to conduct a continuing information and education campaign on their constituents from the barangay down to the sitio so that they will become well-prepared and well-organized when disasters hit or even heavy rains which have become more intense due to climate change,” Montejo said.
