DENR Leads Int’l Clean-Up Day in CV
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is spearheading the conduct of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day in Central Visayas.
DENR-7 during the Kapihan sa PIA forum held Sept. 10 announced that the ICC will be held on September 15, 2018 in identified areas in the region.
However, due to the onset of Typhoon Ompong that is expected to bring rains in Visayas, DENR-7 issued an advisory postponing the cleanup day and re-scheduled it to Sept. 22, 2018.
The theme for this year’s ICC Day is “Tayo ang Solusyon sa Polusyon.”
Engr. John Roy Kyamko, Environmental Management Bureau (EMB-7) Chief of the Solid Waste Management Section, said during the Kapihan forum that about 7,400 individuals have already volunteered, but they are ready to accommodate more volunteers.
Kyamko said that organized clean-ups will be conducted simultaneously along the coastlines of Barangay Pooc, Talisay City, Langtad and Binlod, Argao in Cebu; Bahi, Alburquerque; Upper dela Paz, Cortes and San Francisco, Talibon in Bohol; Silliman Beach in Dumaguete City and Tayasan in Negros Oriental; and Tulapos, Poblacion and Binuongan, Enrique Villamor in Siquijor.
DENR-7 has also urged partner local government units to initiate clean-up activities in their respective coastal areas and other waterways in support to the ICC Day.
“We call on the active participation of the public to join us once again as the Philippines participate to this global cause. The challenge continues as we all aim to achieve a healthy and productive coastal areas, a safe and sound environment for the health and well being of the community,” said Kyamko.
This year’s ICC day observance in Cebu will be conducted with the Civil service Commission (CSC-7) together with other national government agency volunteers in celebration also of the 2018 Philippine Civil Service Month.
Felimon Alex Selor, CENRO-Cebu City Supervising Ecosystem Management Specialist, said that the Philippines is considered as the Coastal Clean-Up Capital due to the number of volunteers who participated in the past clean-up events. (jsme/PIA7-Cebu)
