DENR 7 to Hold ‘Run for the Rivers’ in Another Area
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 Regional Executive Director Isabelo Montejo on Thursday said he wanted to implement the “Run for the Rivers” project not only in Cebu but also to other areas in Central Visayas next year.
Although Montejo failed to mention the next target area for the said project, but he said he is interested to implement this next year in one of the provinces of region 7.
The four provinces are Bohol, Negros Oriental, Siquijor and Cebu.
The launching of the Cebu Run for the Rivers last Sunday at 4:00 am, at the SM Cebu was participated by a total of 2,300 runners who joined the activity as a highlight of this year’s Cebu Environment Month celebration.
The event was considered as successful as it gathered more attendance than last year with 2,100 participants only.
Montejo said the program aims to awaken the Cebuanos on the importance of rehabilitating the rivers.
“Let us stop dumping anymore our garbage to the river. If this is our attitude before, let us change this habit by making ourselves sensitive on the status of our rivers,” Montejo said.
He recalled some 50 years ago when most of the rivers were possessing crystal clear water coming directly from the hillside stream.
Some of the people before were relying rivers as sources of their potable drinks, Montejo added.
There will be more participants recorded on next year’s event, more than the number of last Sunday’s attendance, Montejo said.
