Davide Suspends Classes in Cebu
Governor Hilario P. Davide III declared suspension of classes in all levels in the entire province of Cebu beginning Thursday until Friday (November 7-8), as projected super typhoon “Yolanda” is expected to make a landfall on Thursday morning.
“Mas maayo ning mangandam ta kay we don’t want to get ourselves caught flat-footed,” Davide said in a press conference at the Capitol last Wednesday.
The early announcement was made upon the suggestion of Dr. Arden Monisit, School Division superintendent, Department of Education (Deped)-Cebu Province in an emergency meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Tuesday.
During the meeting, Monisit said it’s prudent to inform the students of the suspension classes at the earliest time to prevent them to go to schools and get stranded by the typhoon.
The governor said he already instructed his Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) Head Neil Sanchez to alert the respective Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management offices of the component cities and towns in the province.
On the suspension of work, the governor withheld any announcement pending assessment of the prevailing conditions tomorrow.
PAGASA Visayas OIC Regional Director Oscar Tabadarevealed that Yolanda is moving westward and forecasted to slice through Eastern Visayas.
He said the radius of the typhoon is as wide as around 1,000 kilometers, which means it could strongly hit the entire Cebu province. (By: Xerxes Alkuino – PIO Cebu)
