Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III admitted that there are times that the natural environment is compromised in the implementation of government projects.

“There is a need to protect the environment, but magkandaghan ang mga tawo, magkadaghan ang needs sa populace. There is also need to fill in the gap to deliver the basic services,” Davide said.

Davide said a water reservoir project, for example, needs a huge land, which could be agriculture, for it to be implemented. He said that land must be sacrificed to bring in source of water for the people.

“Ig deliver sa basic servies naay aspect ma-disturb, maybe ang environment. Like magkuha og tubig para sa community, mag-dig man ka ana og well or reservoir. Ang agricultural maapektuhan. Kinahanglan balanseon na,” he said.

Davide’s statement came following the alleged cutting of 400 trees in Argao town which resulted to Mayor Edcel Galeos’ having to face an inquiry by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The governor, however, said he will just wait for the outcome of the case, but he is also willing to sit down with Galeos and the DENR people to talk about the mayor’s alleged violation of the environmental laws.
