To date, countries other than the Philippines are represented, namely Australia, Malaysia, Poland, Korea, Netherland, Hong Kong as well as Spain with Edgar Marcos Borjas and Alina Nowak, who are currently ranked number six in the world.
In the Philippines, Cebu, Ormoc City, Koronadal City, General Santos City, Tagum City, Davao City, North and South Cotabato, and Zamboanga are represented with over 210 couples or 520 athletes already registered.
Moreover, the inclusion of a new category – the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) DanceSport competition – has increased participation among private schools, colleges and universities.
Competition-For-A-Cause
The event is a competition-for-a-cause that serves as the culmination activity of hundreds of child trainees (mostly under-privileged) who were given regular free DanceSport workshops and follow-through trainings in grassroots programs held in Cebu City and other cities and municipalities within the Province of Cebu particularly in Minglanilla, Sibonga, Carcar and Mandaue.
The event was created for the primary purpose of letting these barangay child trainees get a first-hand experience of what it is like joining in a professionally officiated dance competition. The exposure will instill in them self-discipline, self-confidence, and self-worth. This experience will inspire the children to train harder and aspire for a better future.
The Cebu Open (now in its fourth year) and DanceSport sa Sugbu (now on its eighth) is touted to be the “Friendliest Competition in the World”, and home of the Guinness World of Record for Largest Dance Class. It promotes tourism as an estimated two thousand participants (audience and athletes) from the Philippines and the world gather to witness the event and enjoy the sights of world-class island tourist destinations in Cebu.
