DA Pushes Brown Rice Use
Cagayan De Oro City – Highlighting to its nutritional benefits, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is pushing the use of brown or unpolished rice.
Audy Maagad, DA Supervising Agriculturist for Northern Mindanao stressed during the press conference held in Cagayan de Oro City on 30 August, the need for public to reconsider healthier alternatives to white rice.
He said other than root crops, brown rice offers nutrient and fiber-rich bran and germ, while white rice holds only the residual tasty white bit that makes up the bulk of a grain and gives only pure carbohydrates.
Brown rice is rich of B vitamins, selenium, manganese, fibers, anti-oxidants and good fats.
Meanwhile, in support to this advocacy, DA recently launched the “brown for good” social media campaign, urging the public to participate by posting photos with hashtag #BROWN4good(your region) and tagging friends to do the same. (JCV/PIA-10)
