DA-7 Turns Over Solar-Powered Irrigation System to Farmers in Bohol
The Department of Agriculture Central Visayas (DA-7) turned over the P5.9 million solar-powered irrigation system (SPIS) to the Katipunan Rice and Fish Farmers Association (KARFFA) in Carmen, Bohol yesterday, June 16, 2020.
The newly installed SPIS is the second functional solar-powered irrigation system in the province of Bohol.
DA-7 Regional Executive Director Atty. Salvador Diputado said that the new SPIS will definitely increase rice production in the area and it will also address the water problem of the farmers.
“Farmers are no longer dependent on the rain,” Diputado added.
With SPIS, farmers will be able to have three croppings in a year. Farmers in the area have already started planting rice.
“This irrigation project is expected to benefit 15 hectares of rice land,” Diputado shared.
The project is part of the agency’s food resiliency program to hasten rice and other agricultural supplies amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Officials in Carmen Mayor Jun Toribio, KARRFA President Ted Lomod, Reinerio Makinano representing Bohol, Governor Art Yap, Governor Celestino Gallares, Memorial Hospital Chief Dr. Mutya Kismit Macuno and other municipal and barangay officials witnessed the turnover ceremony. (MLC)
