COVID-19 Cemetery to Ensure Health and Safety Guidelines

Environment Secretary and Cebu Overseer Roy Cimatu guaranteed that he and his team will see to it that the said 2-hectare coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cemetery in Cebu City will meet the highest health and safety standards.

Cimatu also pointed out that they still need to clear some space going to the area since there are many trees present.

“We have to ensure the development of roads leading up to here. There are trees here in the area, most of them mango trees. If the city can find a way to minimize the cutting of trees, the better,” Cimatu said.

The construction site of the proposed 2-hectare COVID-19 cemetery in Cebu City is located in Sitio Patanyg Yuta and Sitio Baksan in Barangay Sapangdaku.

Cimatu, together with Mayor Edgardo Labella and other city and environment officials, visited the site earlier this day. The environment chief and the COVID-19 overseer in Cebu noted that the selected burial site is “the best one” as it is outside the city’s protected area, and is far from other residential areas.

The proposed burial site is exclusively intended for COVID-19 fatalities in the City as an aid to backlogs currently experienced by crematoriums in the city.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is also adopting this proactive approach to help address the COVID-19 crisis. (MLC)
