Comelec Shortens Election Period for SK Poll
(Cebu City PIO) – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has changed the election period for the Special Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election from 45 days to 24 days.
In the latest developments, the Comelec has issued Resolution No. 9928 amending the election period stated in its previous Resolution No. 9905. The new resolution clarified that the election period will now be 15 days before Election Day and 9 days after.
Officially the election period will now start on February 6, 2015 Friday instead of last January 22, 2015 Thursday as stated in the previous resolution and it will end until March 2, 2015 Monday.
Only the election period is shortened while the rest of the calendar of activities for the special SK election remains the same. Gun ban and the appointments or movements of government personnel among other provisions will be in effect during the election period.
The filing of the Certificate of Candidacy (CoC) is slated on February 7-10, while the Campaign Period is set on February 11-19. A manual voting process will be observed on the special SK election day scheduled on Saturday February 21, 2015.
Meanwhile, the Senate committee on local government has approved last January 23, 2015 Friday the House Bill 5209 seeking to postpone the SK elections from February 21, 2015 to October 2016 mounting the calls for reforms in the youth sector’s representation in the government.
Furthermore, the Comelec cannot postpone yet the SK election unless the House Bill 5209 will become a Law. To date, we are still waiting for the latest updates. (Cebu City Public Information Office PIO)
