City to Honor Great Leader
(Cebu City PIO) – The Cebu City Government will honor former City Councilor and Barangay Basak San Nicolas village chief George Rama who passed away last January 26 Monday.
The city will give a “Posthumous Award” for his exemplary public service. The City Council approved the resolution for the award which stated that, “His exemplary life as a dedicated and selfless public servant epitomizes the true meaning of public service and his untimely demise is a great loss to the people of Cebu.”
George Rama (February 14, 1948 – January 26, 2015) who succumbed to pneumonia complication while being confined at the Chong Hua Hospital is survived by wife Geraldine and their 15-year-old son. They will receive the award during the Cebu City 78th Charter Day celebration on February 24 this year.
The Philippine Flag in the Cebu City Hall also flies at half-mast in honor of the great Cebuano leader.
Thousands of friends, relatives and supporters flocked to the Rama Compound to offer flowers and prayers, visit and attend his wake at the Rama Ancestral House in Rama Compound, Barangay Basak San Nicolas.
George’s remains will be brought to the Cebu City Hall for public viewing and a Necrological Service tomorrow February 3 Tuesday. Interment is slated on the same day at the Cebu Memorial Park in Barangay Banilad this city.
Looking back, George Rama served as the number one City Councilor from 2001 to 2004 and chaired the Committee on Public Services where he sponsored the ordinance that institutionalized massive cleanup after the Sinulog celebration and co-sponsored the creation of the Coastline Management Board, among several others.
George was also elected as the Barangay Captain of Basak San Nicolas since 2004 showing exemplary leadership. He founded the multi-awarded Tribu Lumad Basakanon and brought several projects for his constituents.
In the last interview with the BARUGG News last January 5, 2015 for the turn-over of brand new Hyundai for Barangay Basak San Nicolas, George Rama shared that the new vehicle will be of great help for their constituents especially in cases of emergency.
By law of succession Barangay Basak San Nicolas number one councilor Norman Navarro assumed as the new village chief.
“Your greatness is carved within our hearts”, a message from the Cebu City Government employees and the People of Cebu City can be read in a tarpaulin placed at the Plaza Sugbo in front of the Cebu City Hall as a tribute to a great leader.
