City of Naga Celebrates Charter Anniversary With Series of Activities

The City of Naga marks its Sixth Charter Day anniversary with a weeklong celebration.

On Wednesday Mayor Valdemar Chiong opened the two-day Agro Industrial Fair at the city’s reclamation park which includes a free spaying and neutering of cats and dogs in the area, and a dance competition. On Thursday the city offers a Thanksgiving Mass at the St. Francis de Assisi Church, followed by the awarding ceremony for winners of the Agro Industrial fair.

Chiong, who was reelected for his third term, said the Nagahanons can expect more development in their city, like the soon to rise modern public market just near the City Hall, among others.

Naga became city through the passage of RA 9491 in July 2007. It was, however, demoted to being a mere town in November 2009 when the Supreme Court favored the petition of the League of Cities of the Philippines, which questioned the Constitutionality of its cityhood like the 15 others, which were approved in the 15th Congress. But after a series of flip-flopping decisions the same court ordered that all 16 affected towns retain their cityhood status.
