City Acquires 10 Garbage Trucks close to P20M; DPS: No more Delays in Garbage Collection

The collection of garbage in Cebu City will greatly improve days from now after the city has acquired 10 more garbage trucks, particularly for the solid wastes.

Department of Public Services (DPS) head Dionesio Gualiza said eight of the garbage trucks are big that cost over P2 million each, while the two others are medium sized worth more than P900,000.00. The 10 garbage trucks cost at close to P20 million.

There are only 14 garbage trucks assigned to the Department of Public Services (DPS) and Gualiza said some of these trucks are occasionally unserviceable.

“Pinaagi niining mga bag-ong napalit nga garbage trucks sa dakbayan makatabang kini aron dili na maproblema ang DPS sa paghakut sa mga basura,” Gualiza said.

Gualiza said that with only 14 garbage trucks assigned to his department, usually the DPS will experience problem whenever some of the units bogged down.

The DPS usually augment the barangay once their garbage trucks will become defective. That is why the public sometimes observes delays in the collection of garbage.

Mayor Michael Rama wants that the collection of garbage throughout the city should be made 24 hours to keep the entire city always clean. The city is giving additional honorarium to the barangay garbage collectors.

The garbage collection in the barangays is only done during daytime that is why early in the morning piles of garbage still remain in the streets waiting for the garbage trucks to collect them.

About 400 tons of garbage are collected everyday from different parts of the city and all of them are transported by the garbage trucks to a private landfill in Consolacion.

Gaualiza said if the barangay officials would just help implement the provisions of the law, by segregating the biodegradable, non-biodegradable and garbage that can be recycled, only a few garbage left for the the landfill.
