Citom to Revert Sanciangko,Panganiban Roads

The Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM) is planning to revert Sanciangko Street and a short portion of Katipunan Street from one-way to a two-way traffic, hoping that it can help solve traffic congestion within the nearby areas.

CITOM Executive Officer Rafael Christopher Yap said there is an ongoing study being conducted by the traffic engineering section that would include the suggestion to make Panganiban Street, the road in front of the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC), again into a two-way road.

Sanciangko Street, the road that connects D. Jakosalem Street to Taboan Public Market, and the portion of Panganiban Street from corner Sanciangko to Natalio Bacalso Avenue, used to be two-way, but these were converted to one-way.

Traffic experts believed that once Sanciangko Street will be reverted to two-way it can help decongest the traffic flow along Natalio Bacalso Avenue for those vehicles going to the north direction.
Sanciangko used to be the route of the “Tartanilyas” that travels back and forth from Taboan public market to corner D. Jakosalem Street sometime in 1980’s while those vehicles coming from Natalio Bacalso Avenue proceeding to Colon Street were allowed to make a right turn to Panganiban Street when it was still two-way.

When asked of when will be the experimental two-way scheme be implemented, Yap failed to give a categorical answer, saying “No definite date because it is still under study.”

He said there is a plan to make two-way the portion of Katipunan Street from corner V. Rama Avenue to corner Tres de Abril Street, but Yap still failed to elaborate of how it will be implemented without affecting the flow of traffic along corner V. Rama and Natalio Bacalso Avenues.

“Mao na nga ato pa gitun-an,” the CITOM official said.  At present, the only road exit for those vehicles coming from Labangon area is the Tres de Abril Street to Natalio Bacalso Avenue because the small portion of Katipunan Street is one-way from Tres de Abril to V. Rama Avenue.
