China’s version of TikTok, Douyin, is limiting its 14 year-old and below users to 40 minutes a day of usage on the app though a feature called “youth mode.”

The “youth mode” of the app locks these users from accessing it from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on a daily basis.

This comes after the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) introduced a new cyberspace policy, to which Douyin is one of the signatories.

The new CCP cyberspace regulation is aiming to keep track and discipline the problem of toxic fan behavior and unhealthy celebrity worship culture in the country.

In relation to the agreement, Douyin announced in a statement on their move on September 18 that users aged 14 and under are automatically on youth mode when they open the app.

Youth mode also aims to keep a peaceful and safe space for its users. Douyin also added in their statement that the new feature will push enriching content and educational material.

The company had an average of 600 million daily active users in the first quarter of 2021.
