The whole world celebrates Environment Day today, and Central Visayas is joining by several activities like tree-planting.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 has promised to plant more seedlings all over the region in the next few years. DENR 7 regional director Isabelo Montejo said that as of May 17, their Forest Management Services has already produced more than 8 million, which could cover about 63 percent of the region’s 13 million target. Cebu has reported more than 2 million of this target, he said.

“Aside from achieving our targets on the number of seedlings, we also ensure that we have produced quality seedlings which shall be used to supply our various tree planting and growing program here in the region,” Montejo said. DENR 7 has a budget of P136 million for its reforestation of the region’s 24,461 hectares of identified forest land.

Meanwhile, DENR Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje, in a press statement, has urged the public to cut down their daily food waste as it aggravates the country’s garbage. Paje said that this is the best time to start the program as the country celebrates Environment Month this June, which is started with today’s World Environment Day observance, with a theme: “Think. Eat. Save.” This program, he said, is aimed at reducing food waste.

For one, Paje said the Filipinos can do it by buying food products which are packaged using recyclable materials.
