Cebuanos Place Second in Batang Pinoy Duathlon
Cebu’s junior triathletes Yuan Chiongbian and Catherine Angeli Yu placed second in the girls’ and boys’ duathlon of the Batang Pinoy Championship Sunday in Danao City in northern Cebu.
The bemedalled Chiongbian of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) finished the race in 38 minutes and 7 seconds and had an identical time with eventual champion Brent Valelo of Caloocan City.
The organizers said it was a head-to-head finish with the latter just a hairline ahead.
John Caleb Barlin nabbed third place in 38:10.
Yu, also from SHS-AdC, nabbed second place in 45:52, while Una Janus Sibayan of Muntinlupa City won in 45:46.
Lauren Justine Plaza of Biñan took third place in 45:52.
In volleyball, the girls and boys teams of Team Cebu City 2 kept their perfect run at the Sacred Heart School Gym in Cebu City.
Cebu City Cebu 2, composed of players from the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), University of San Carlos (USC) and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) defeated Sta. Rosa, 25-17, 19-25, 26-24 for their third win in the event.
Sta. Rosa also lost to Mandaue City, 18-25, 25-16,25-23.
Mandaue also got its second win Sunday against Davao City, 15-25, 25-19, 29-27, to improve to 2-1. Davao City is third at 1-2, while Sta. Rosa is last at 0-3.
In Pool A, Pangasinan won its third straight match against Team Cebu City 1, 25-13, 25-16 , while Valencia secured its second with against ARMM, 25-22, 25-15. Gen. Trias also won against ARMM, 14-25, 25-19, 25-21.
Pangasinan leads Pool A with a 3-0 record and is followed by Gen. Trias and Valencia at 2-1; Team Cebu City 1 is at 1-2 and ARMM is last at 0-4.
In the girls division, Team Cebu City 2 beat Gen. Santos City, 25-15, 21-25, 25-18, while Quezon City beat Danao City, 25-13, 25-8. Team Cebu City 2 leads the group at 3-0, while Quezon is second at 2-0. Cebu Province is at 1-1, while Mandaue City and Gen. Santos City are tied at 1-2.
In boxing, Limbert Cainap saved the host from a woeful start and logged the only victory in the opening day late Saturday with a win in the Paperweight (44kgs) Division over Carl Lester Oledan of the Leyte Sports Association.
Before Cainap, five Team Cebu City boxers lost, while Cebu Province went two for two.
Cainap was trailing in the scorecards of the five judges in the first round but adjusted his tactics in the second to win 29-28, 29-28, and 28-29.
In contrast, Renan Enot lost by TKO in 41 seconds of the first round to John Jaylord Bejasa of Koronadal, South Cotabato; Lester Balabat lost to Alexander Bonita of Cebu Province via TKO in 47 seconds of the first round; Charlie Tatoy lost by unanimous decision to Jimler Cubay of Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat; and Bryx Piala lost by unanimous decision to Roldan Hablero.
Olympian Efren Tabanas, who is the chief trainer of the Cebu City Boxing Team, said they fielded neophyte boxers who are products of the Bakbakan sa Sugbu program of the Cebu City Sports Commission.
Aside from Bonita, Cebu Province’s Keyt Nino Abatayo won his match against Heldo Polines of Cotabato Province, 30-27, 28-29, 29-28, in the school boys Mosquitoweight division (38-40kgs).
In futsal, visiting teams Romblon, Baguio City and Aklan, and host Cebu City are at the top of their respective groups after the second day at the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) futsal court.
Romblon remained at the top spot of Group A of the Boys Division after two wins Sunday. Romblon handed Mandaue City its only defeat, 1-0, and also edged out Aklan, 2-1.
Romblon has 12 points from a 4-0-0 slate, and is followed by Mandaue City with seven points from two wins, a loss and a draw. Aklan is in third place with six points with still two matches remaining for all three teams.
Cebu City, on the other hand, leads Group B of the Boys Division after winning its only match Sunday, 1-0, against Naga City.
