Cebu Sees Increase in HIV Cases: What You Need to Know

Published

on

During the Openline Forum, the City Health Department (CHD) revealed that Cebu City has recorded 101 new HIV cases in the first quarter of 2025. Health officials expressed concern over the increasing number of infections, particularly among young adults aged 15 to 34, emphasizing the need for early detection and intervention.

CHD officials attributed the rise in cases to expanded testing efforts, as well as high-risk behaviors such as unprotected sex and needle-sharing among drug users. They reiterated the importance of regular testing and treatment, noting that early detection can help prevent the progression of HIV into AIDS.

New Treatment Advancements
While HIV remains a serious health concern, recent medical breakthroughs offer hope for better treatment options. Scientists are developing long-acting injectable therapies, which could reduce the need for daily medication and improve adherence. Additionally, gene-editing technology is being explored as a potential way to modify immune cells to resist HIV infection.

Researchers are also testing new drug combinations, such as islatravir and lenacapavir, which may offer more effective treatment for drug-resistant HIV strains.

The Department of Health (DOH) has urged the government to declare a national public health emergency due to the rapid increase in cases. Health officials in Cebu are also ramping up awareness campaigns, encouraging safe sex practices and regular HIV testing, which is available for free at social hygiene clinics. Several local clinics have also ramped up their services to offer counseling and support groups for newly diagnosed patients, aiming to reduce stigma and improve treatment adherence.
