Cebu Farmers Receive P1M from DAR
At least 148 farmers from Yolanda-affected areas in Cebu received a P1.2-million indemnity from the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), the Cebu Provincial government and the Philippine Crop Insurance Program (PCIC).
DAR-7 assistant regional director Dr. Antonio del Socorro was recently in Cebu to distribute the checks worth P1,277,192 to the farmers of Bogo City, Daanbantayan, Borbon, Medellin, Sogod, San Remegio, Sta. Fe, and Bantayan.
The beneficiaries were among those whose crops were devastated by Yolanda last year.
The indemnity award came from the program that DAR and PCIC signed under the Agricultural Insurance Program (AIP) which guarantees farmers an insurance in case their farm products or livestock animals are destroyed by natural calamities or accidents.
Under the present agreement, the AIP has a P17.1- billion insurance coverage for crops and farm products.
DAR explained that this program intends to cushion effects of natural calamities which are seen to damage the agrarian industry.
