Cebu City’s Department of Public Services (DPS) has reported a 45-ton decrease in garbage left by Sinulog revellers from 200 tons last year to only 155 tons this year.

DPS assistant head John Paul Gelasque said they usually haul some 200 tons of garbage after every Sinulog celebration.

Gelasque said the city’s street sweepers started clearing the parade route of garbage immediately after the Sinulog grand parade from 5 p.m. on Sunday until 6 a.m. on Monday.

He said the DPS finished cleaning the city’s streets before heavy rains started to fall Monday morning which caused flooding in some parts of the city and other areas in Cebu.

The heavy rains prompted Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III to suspend classes in public elementary and high schools all over Cebu on Monday.

A big chunk of the garbage left by some two million revellers were empty plastic water bottles and food containers, the DPS said.

Gelasque said most of the tons of garbage collected were in urban areas like near the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, Cebu City Hall, Colon St., Legaspi St. Fuente Osmeña Circle, Mango Ave. and the Baseline area. (PNA)FPV/EB/EDS
