Cebu City’s Charter Celebration Kicks Off
The 79th Charter Anniversary celebration of this Queen City of the Philippines kicked off today February 8, 2016 Monday with a Holy Mass at the Plaza Sugbo.
His Excellency Most Rev. Jose S. Palma, D.D., Archbishop of Cebu led the Thanksgiving Mass.
In his homily, Archbishop Palma urged everyone to live Christian values in their lives, their families, the working place, and to the world, adding that every day let the Christian Faith be an inspiration and hope.
He also commended the Cebu City Government for the success of the Feast of Senior Santo Niño the Sinulog celebration and the 51st International Eucharisic Congress or IEC which the organizers considered as the best EIC ever.
After the Holy Mass, the celebration of the Family Day of the thousands of Cebu City Government employees followed. Various games and raffles with exciting prizes added color to the celebration.
Aside from the Family Day which also coincide with the Chinese New Year celebration today, the city government employees are also celebrating the resumption to office of Cebu City elected Mayor Michael Lopez Rama after the 60-day suspension.
Meanwhile, series of activities are lined-up for the grand 79th Cebu City Charter Day celebration leading to the big day on February 24, 2016.
Looking back, it was on February 24, 1937, when the City of Cebu was born by virtue of Commonwealth Act No.58 through the initiative of Don Vicente Rama, the father of Cebu City Charter.
The then municipality of Cebu who was under the Cebu Provincial Government became an independent Chartered City known as “Cebu City”. The celebration will be observed as a holiday in the entire city. (Cebu City Public Information Office PIO/Greggy Jiggs P. Senados)
