Cebu City Wants to Take Over Angkas
The Cebu City government is set to take over Angkas, an online booking system recently banned by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
“Many people have been texting me about Angkas. Since Angkas is providing a real service to the public, the City Government will be studying how to take over Angkas’ operations by hiring their administrative personnel,” said Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña in his message posted on his Facebook account Monday.
He said the city will provide Angkas’ service using the current Angkas app, that is if they can make a deal with the app owner. Not only will Angkas be revived, Osmeña said the booking fee will also be waived, which means passengers will pay a lesser fare.
There are more than 100 Angkas drivers affected when LTFRB issued the ban citing the app’s lack of permit. LTFRB also said motorcycles are not safe to both the drivers and the passengers.
However, despite of the ban, Osmeña allowed Angkas drivers to still operate within the city, saying this mode of transportation has helped the riding public especially those who are in a hurry but cannot afford a taxi cab ride.
