Cebu City to Mark 78th Charter Day Anniversary

(Cebu City PIO) — Bearing the theme, “Steering the City towards a Better and Brighter Future,” the Queen City of the South will be celebrating its 78th Charter Day Anniversary on February 24 this year.

The Agro-Trade Fair Cum Exhibit held at the Plaza Sugbo which will run for five days from February 9-13 kicked off the series of activities lined-up for the grand celebration.

A sending of Love Notes for Cebu City Government Employees is set tomorrow February 13 at the lobby of the Legislative Building in Cebu City Hall. The Family Love Run and Family Day is scheduled on the following day February 14 at the South Road Properties.
The Service Showcase Exhibit is slated on February 16 to 20 at SM City Cebu. An Essay Writing Contest will be on February 17, while a Quiz Bowl will be on February 18.

“Employee’s Night” at the Plaza Sugbo will be held on February 20 and the awarding of Outstanding Employees and Outstanding Youth Leaders will be done on February 21.

There will also be a “Badminton Challenge” on February 21-22 and a “Cycling Cup” on February 22. The Don Vicente Rama Memorial Lecture will be on February 23 at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation.

On February 24, there will be a Holy Mass, Flag-raising Ceremony and Floral Offering to the monument of Don Vicente Rama at the Plaza Sugbo. The “Book Launching” and “Testimonial Dinner” will be conducted on the same day at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel.

Looking back, it was on February 24, 1937, when the City of Cebu was born by virtue of Commonwealth Act No.58 through the initiative of Don Vicente Rama, the father of Cebu City Charter.

The then municipality of Cebu who was under the Cebu Provincial Government became an independent Chartered City known as “Cebu City”. The celebration will be observed as a holiday in the entire city.
