Cebu City to Implement Sinulog Basura Watch
The city government will implement the Sinulog Basura Watch in a bid to reduce the volume of waste generated during the Sinulog celebration this year and the succeeding years.
According to Tina Cabrera, Cebu City environment and natural resources officer, the Sinulog Basura Watch is a campaign to educate the public to properly dispose their garbage in designated bins during the Sinulog Grand Parade on Jan. 21.
“This program is an information campaign and we target to revive our segregation campaign by 2018,” said Cabrera during a presscon held Jan. 12.
Six eco-stations shall be set up in Plaza Independencia, Sto. Niño Church, and Cebu Cathedral.
The eco-stations will feature a tent and four garbage receptacles each labeled with the corresponding type of waste. It will be managed by 221 Barangay Environmental Officers (BEOs) and volunteers starting from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm during the Sinulog Grand Parade.
BEOs and other deputized enforcers and volunteers will strictly enforce local ordinances on littering.
Violators will be apprehended.
“We will strictly enforce the laws on segregation even during Sinulog time,” said Cabrera.
The program is initiated by the Cebu City government through the Solid Waste Management Board in cooperation with institutions, the public sector, and environmental advocates. (rmn/PIA7 Cebu)
