Cebu City Mayor-elect Eyes 10 Flyovers, 10 Underpasses to Solve Traffic

Cebu City Mayor-elect Tomas Osmeña has said he will push for the construction of 10 flyovers and 10 underpasses worth some PHP7.3 billion to help solve the city’s traffic problem.

Osmena said the construction of flyovers will cost PHP3.31 billion, while the construction of underpasses cost some PHP4 billion.

These will be constructed in different intersections that have been identified as bottlenecks, he said.

Osmena said these projects were identified by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in their Roadmap Study for Sustainable Development in Metro Cebu 2015 interim report.

Osmeña said he wants these projects to be implemented within his term.

The JICA report said the 20 traffic bottlenecks are located on trunk roads where traffic is expected to increase in the future, where “vertical improvements are needed.”

“It is obvious that minor modifications of traffic signal and geometric design will not solve bottlenecks,” the report said.

JICA identified the traffic bottlenecks by gauging the travel speed of 296 taxis for several days through Global Positioning System devices.

“Results identified traffic congestion on road links and intersections where vehicles can only run at less than 10 kilometers per hour,” the report said. (PNA) LAP/EB/EBP
