Cebu City Councilor Proposes BRT Phases Be Done Simultaneously

Cebu City councilor James Cuenco proposes the simultaneous implementation of Cebu City’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) phases in October.

While the plan is to begin only with phase 1 this October, Cuenco argues that phase 1 is just “too short” for commuters to take.

Phase 1 of BRT only runs from the Cebu City Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT) to the Cebu Provincial Capitol with four bus stations in CSBT, Cebu Normal University (CNU), Fuente Osmeña, and Capitol).

“I don’t think commuters would want to ride gikan sa (Cebu) South Bus (Terminal) and disembark at the Capitol unya mosakay na sab og lain,” Cuenco said in a press release.

Phase 2 will run from South Road Properties (SRP) to the CSBT while Phase 3 will run from Tabunok, Talisay City to Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City; from Talisay City to SRP; and from IT Park to Barangay Talamban.

“We are hoping madayon nalang unta nga madungan ang Phase 2 and Phase 3, even if it takes time,” Cuenco said.

Cuenco, who is also Cebu City’s transportation and communications head said that he will meet with the officials of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to raise his proposal.

Earlier this year, over 200 trees were earth-balled along Osmeña Blvd. in preparation for Phase 1 of BRT. (ASC)
