Cebu City Council Forms Four-Man Team to Probe Killing of Drug Suspects

The Cebu City Council has formed a four-man committee to look into drug-related killings in the city.

Police said at least 50 suspected drug pushers have been killed in Cebu by unidentified assailants riding on motorcycles from July 1 to August 9.

Cebu City Councilor Raymond Garcia will head the committee, with Councilors Jerry Guardo, Philip Zafra and Jose Daluz III as members.

Cebu City Councilor Pastor Alcover Jr., who authored the resolution creating the committee, said the group will help the legislative body craft laws.

The committee will also help the investigation launched by such government agencies as the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Alcover said Cebuanos want clearer information on several shooting incidents reportedly related to illegal drugs.

The committee will just be a fact-finding body and will come up with recommendations, he said, adding that it will not file cases after the investigation.

Daluz said the committee just wants to know the facts of the killings, particularly the extrajudicial ones.

“We want to know if they are killings by a syndicate or random killings. We want to know because we want to help the police also. Maybe we can give more budget for the police because we want to solve these killings,” he said. (PNA) CVL/EB/RSM
