Cebu City Council Eyes Multi-Sports Facility at SRP
(PNA) — The Cebu City Council has passed a resolution proposing the establishment of a multi-sports facility on a 10-hectare lot at the city government-owned South Road Properties (SRP).
Cebu City Councilor Eugenio Gabuya Jr., proponent of the resolution, said the facility would include 10 basketball courts, 10 volleyball courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a soccer field and a jogging track.
Gabuya said 10 hectares is not even 10 percent of the 300-hectare SRP.
Gabuya said his proposed sports facility will not be in conflict with the stadium Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has envisioned at the SRP.
He said the sports facility will instead complement the stadium proposed by the mayor that can accommodate 40,000 people.
He said the facility would generate income for the city government through entrance or users’ fees.
Gabuya said he also met with SRP Manager Roberto Varquez to identify which portion of the SRP would be appropriate for the project.
Gabuya said representatives of a private organization and a group of civil engineers will accompany him next week in an inspection of the site.
The private parties will help in conceptualizing the multi-sports facility.
Gabuya said Cebu does not have a venue that can host international sports events like table tennis, lawn tennis, track and field, boxing, athletics, football, gymnastics, archery, dart, taekwondo, and dancesports.
He said Cebu City can also host a triathlon if the facility is completed. (PNA) JBP/EB
