Carmen Town Successfully Holds 1st Provincial Sports Meet
‘Amazing Carmen’ successfully hosted the Cebu Provincial Sports and Cultural Meet (CPSCM) 2016 last week with the theme “Paugnat sa Kusog ug Kulturanhong Kalihokan Kahigayonan sa Kalambuan sa Katakos ug Kahanas sa Sugbuanong Kabataan.”
It was the first time that the town hosted such special event for athletes all over the province.
“This event is a realization of my father’s dream who was once a mayor before. This really means a lot to me,” expressed Carmen mayor Martin Gerard T. Villamor.More than 12,000 delegates from 44 municipalities in the province joined the annual celebration of sportsmanship, teamwork, strength, agility, intelligence and beauty.
The municipality of Carmen provided extra boons such as strong WiFi connection, a free snacks and water kiosk, and hardworking people to assist during the event.
“We are very thankful to municipality of Carmen most especially to their mayor for giving us an extraordinary brand of hospitality in hosting this event,” expressed Nenita G. Jeralve, Sports & Culture Coordinator of Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu Province Division.
Villamor, in his speech during the closing ceremony, committed to double their hospitality and efforts in hosting the week-long activity next year.
He added that he would improve the town’s sports program to increase their athletes’ potential in winning sporting events.
Municipalities of Compostela, Catmon and Sogod co-hosted the event as billeting areas and venues of some sports events.
Activities
Cebu Provincial Sports and Cultural Meeting 2016 held 20 sporting events in elementary and secondary division, including arnis, archery, basketball, baseball, billiards, boxing, football, swimming, and volleyball, among others.
Aside from sports, cultural competitions were also held on vocal solo, duet, folk dance, cheerdance, drum and bugle corps and the first Mister and Miss DepEd Cebu Province 2016.
Mister and Miss DepEd Cebu Province took its debut this year where top 12 female and 12 male candidates from different municipalities of the secondary division competed for the title.
Part of the pageant was the make-up competition by Grade 11 students who took up Cosmetology in Senior High School’s Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track.
“We wanted to harmonize the students with this activity that’s why we’ve decided to make use of the students’ developing potential who took up cosmetology in senior high,” said Jeralve.
Daanbantayan town went home as the overall champion after bagging 58 gold medals, 39 silver and 24 bronze in the meet.
Balamban, with the most number of delegates, ranked second with 28 gold, 9 silver and 19 bronze medals. Consolacion got the third place with 25 gold, 28 silver and 39 bronze medals; Liloan on fourth place with 23 gold, 26 silver, 21 bronze medals; and, Compostela with 18 gold, 16 silver and 18 bronze medals on the fifth spot.
Champions and qualified athletes of the games will advance to the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet on February 2017 in City of Naga, Cebu wherein they will compete with other provinces and cities in Central Visayas. (Francis Nacua)
