Carcar Porks Banned as First African Swine Fever Case Confirmed

Cebu has recorded its first African Swine Fever (ASF) case after slaughtered hogs from Carcar City tested positive for the virus.

The Cebu Provincial government issued a temporary ban on pork products from Carcar City on March 6, as Asian Swine Fever (ASF) was confirmed in the city.

The Executive Order No. 9-B was issued last March 6, 2023, by Cebu Provincial Governor Gwendolyn Garcia to temporarily ban the entry of pork products coming from Carcar City.

On March 1, the test conducted by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) through its Animal Disease Diagnostic and Reference Laboratory (ADDRL) confirmed that the ASF virus was detected among the blood samples from slaughtered pigs in Carcar City.

Garcia also issued a separate executive order last March 7 to stop the exporting of live hogs from farms not accredited by the Bureau of Animal Industry.

“Under EO 9-C, breeder and commercial swine farms duly accredited by BAI may be allowed to export pigs to other parts of the country subject to the concurrence of the Provincial Veterinary Office,” the Facebook post reads.

Meanwhile, local backyard hog breeders will now be required to have a Veterinary Health Certificate and a backyard swine farm registration for the transportation of pigs within the Cebu Province. (ASC)
