Capitol’s Delegation in Sinulog 2017

Beaming in the bright weather, the Cebu Flowerpecker float of the Cebu Provincial Government highlighted Capitol’s thrust of protecting our biodiversity during the Sinulog 2017 Grand Parade yesterday.

Like a miracle, the sunny weather defied the initial forecast of gloomy sky with light to moderate rains.

Governor Hilario P. Davide III with wife Jobel Angan-Davide, Vice Governor Agnes A. Magpale, Provincial Board Members Christopher “Dong” Baricuatro, Victoria “Tata” Corominas, Edsel Galeos, Glenn Bercede, Yolanda Daan, Earl Tidy Oyas led the Capitol delegation composed of department heads and employees.

Also part of the delegation were tourism officers from different local government units (LGUs) of Cebu dubbed as “eco-warriors.”

On board the Cebu Flowerpecker float were guardians of the forest composed of Cebu Chocolate Queen Raquel Choa as Maria Cacao and beauty queens from selected LGUs as diwatas.

Spectators of the parade, Kate Calago and Nina Floreniosos were delighted to see the province delegation during the Sinulog parade.

The two said that the float brought by the Capitol gave a substantial message and knowledge to everyone, not just a mere spectacle in the street parade.

“Ganahan kaayo mi sa float sa Probinsya kay nindot kayo pagmugna sa porma sa float ug maayo pud ilang tema nga pagprotektar sa kalikupan,” expressed Floreniosos.

“Nalipay pud ko makakita nga ang mga nag-unang mga float sa Sinulog dinhi sa kalsada kay mga nindot ug usa ana kay ang float sa Probinsya sa Sugbo,” said Calago pointing out the Capitol delegation as third in line in the parade.

The two ladies, both 22 years old from Dumanjug, had been watching Sinulog since they were still in high school. They said that this time, they grasped a good sight that educated them on the rare flora and fauna in Cebu.

Provincial contingents

In this years’ Sinulog, nine of the dancing contingents dancing their faith to the Santo Niño were from the towns and cities in Cebu province.

Tribu Ginatilanon from Ginatilan, Tribu Sugbogo from Bogo City, Hugpong Asturiasnon from Asturias danced in free interpretation in Sinulog competition.

Pundok Nagahanon from City of Naga, DepEd Youth Cultural Troup from Danao City, Talisay City Central Elementary School, Carcar City Division and Municipality of Tuburan were among the groups who competed in the Sinulog-based competition.

In the Sinulog-based competition, City of Talisay won the 1st prize in Best in Musicality award while Carcar City and Muncipality of Dumanjug placed 3rd and 4th respectively. In Free Interpretation Hugpong Asturiasnon bagged the 3rd spot in the musicality contest.

Munipality of Tuburan got the 3rd spot for the best street dance competition along with contigents from Catbalogan(1st place), Tangub City (2nd place), Basak (4th place) and Dumaguete City (5th place).

Contingents from the province namely Talisay City (for Sinulog-based) and Asturias town (for free interpretation) bested all the costume designs in Sinulog bagging P100,000 cash prize each.

Majority of the winners for the best ritual showdown for the Sinulog-based were from the province. They were from Municipality of Tuburan (5th place), City of Talisay (4th place), Danao City (3rd place) and Carcar City (2nd place). Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe from Tangub City grabbed the first spot.

In free interpretation, Municipality of Asturias took the fifth spot for the best ritual showdown. Other winners were contingents from Lanao del Norte (1st place), Catbalogan (2nd place), Dumaguete City (3rd place) and Basak (4th place).

First place winners of the best street dance, free interpretation and Sinulog-based showdown received P1 million cash prize each. Second placers each received P750,000; P500,000 each for third placers; P300,000 each for fourth placers; and P200,000 each for fifth placers. (by Francis Nacua)
