The Cebu Provincial Government on Tuesday kicked off the annual distribution of cash assistance to all barangay workers in Camotes Island amounting P2.892 million for the three towns’ 1,442 frontline services workers.

Every year in December, Capitol offers hard cash gifts to barangay health workers (BHW), daycare center workers (DCCW), barangay nutrition scholars (BNS), barangay animal health aides (BAHA) and tanods.

This year, health aides were granted P2,400 each while the tanods got P1,500 each.

Governor Hilario P. Davide III said the province acknowledges the valuable role of barangay workers in serving the people.

Ang inyong provincial government maningkamot gyud kanunay na mahatag ang inyong tanan nga gihangyo,” Davide said during the ceremony.

Vice Governor Agnes A. Magpale also went with Davide in giving cash incentives in Tudela, Poro and San Francisco. Fifth district Provincial Board members Jude Durano-Sybico and Miguel Antonio Magpale were also present in the event.

Belinda Oliveros, 55, a BHW for 16 years in Barangay Poblacion in Poro, was elated by the cash incentive she received from the province.

At least we received something which we can use to buy rice. We’re happy with this early Christmas gift,” Oliveros said in Cebuano.

Of the three towns, San Francisco has the biggest number of beneficiaries with 699 followed by Poro (463) and Tudela (280).

In Tudela, the top Capitol officials turned over two checks with a total worth of P700,000 as financial assistance for the construction of a pathway in Villahermosa Marine Sanctuary and for socio-cultural programs.

During the distribution of cash incentives, municipal officials of each town led by their respective mayors and vice mayors assisted Capitol officials.

Lupons to get cash

Meanwhile, Davide said members of the Lupong Tagapamayapa (conciliation panel) would also receive cash incentives starting next year.

Although Davide made no mention as to the amount, he said an allocation for their cash gifts was already included in the 2017 budget.

According to him, this move is a way of recognizing the crucial role of barangay personnel who are at the frontline in settling disputes in the community. (Kelvin Canizares)
