The Cebu Provincial Government, through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), announced the holding of the third annual Summer Youth Camp in Alta Resort, Cordova town on May 16-18, 2018.

With the theme “Ako Mahimo: A campaign against teenage pregnancy and HIV and AIDS”,  the youth camp aims to raise awareness on the prevention of teenage pregnancy and the proliferation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Organized in collaboration with the Population Commission (PopCom), the camp, now on its 3rd year, will also produce a new set of peer educators who will then echo their learning to their fellow youth.

Ma. Luzely Rufo, PSWDO population program officer, said that at least 150 participants, aged 15 to 19, across the province are expected to present their sustainable advocacy programs during this three-day event, which will then be implemented in their respective areas.

According to a report from the Department of Health (DOH) 7, HIV patients in the region are getting younger with the Province of Cebu having 3,665 HIV cases from 1984 to 2017; or around 88 percent of the total number of cases in Central Visayas.

“Once na maka-train ta og bag-o, maka-receive sila sa mga bag-o na kaalam aron pud maka-himo tag peer educators sa kada-LGU,” Rufo said. | Alejandro Corona, Cebu Provincial Capitol PIO CNU intern
