Capitol Rolls Up Plans for Better Traffic Management
The Cebu Provincial Government, through Jonathan Tumulak, focal person on traffic management, laid down the Capitol’s immediate plans of action aimed at easing the traffic concerns in the province.
“Ang problema sa traffic dili masulbad sa usa ka siyudad, sa usa ka lungsod, kon dili masulbad ang traffic kung adunay close coordination (of local government units),” said Tumulak, adding that the province’s traffic condition will only worsen if no actions will be done to address it today.
Tumulak pointed out the need to release traffic advisories through the Provincial Information Office (PIO), and to relay the need for assistance and traffic management to concerned offices, such as the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
Both PDRRMO and Tumulak aided Minglanilla town in managing the traffic during its annual celebration of the Sugat Kabanhawan last April 1, Easter Sunday.
The Capitol is also set to conduct a series of trainings to traffic managers, specifically on traffic law enforcement, traffic engineering and road safety audit.
Tumulak said that he wants traffic enforcers to work in unison―from the signs they use when directing traffic to the road signs placed.
According to the 2017 data from the Land Transportation Office, there are 574,819 motor vehicles in Cebu Province; and it is expected to increase to at least 800,000 by the end of this year.
With the influx of newly-registered vehicles expected this year, Tumulak assured that the Capitol will help in the establishment of a Traffic Management Office in local government units that do not have one yet.
“Gi-create siya in preparation sa iyang lungsod tungod kay nag-expect man ta nga dili lang ang Metro Cebu ang mu-boom. (We will aide in the construction of traffic management office because we are expecting our neighboring municipalities to economically boom, not just in Metro Cebu),” Tumulak said.
Traffic code eyed in San Fernando town
In San Fernando town, the traffic gridlock experienced by motorists last April 10 along the stretch of Barangay Pitalo, prompted town officials to craft regulations and pass a traffic code that would help ease vehicular jams especially during fiesta celebrations, according to Tumulak.
“I’ve been instructed by Governor Davide to set a meeting with San Fernando’s mayor to see how can Capitol assist in the town’s traffic management, especially on what happened during its fiesta,” Tumulak said.
The movement caused some netizens to protest in social media.
San Fernando Mayor Lakambini Reluya recently met with Tumulak and discussed schemes to improve the town’s road management. These include regulation over illegally parked vehicles, disco and perya (local amusement).
