Capitol, Partners Set Bamboo-Planting on Sept. 22
In celebration of the World Bamboo Day, the Cebu Provincial Government, together with some private and religious groups, will plant at least 4,000 trees and bamboo plants this Saturday, Sept. 22.
Why plant bamboo? It is because bamboo is the fastest growing plant and it protects the riverbanks from erosion, said Baltazar Tribunalo, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.
Tribunalo, during a press conference recently, said trees, including bamboos, sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert this into plant fibers, preventing waters from causing landslides and flooding.
Tribunalo was joined by Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) officer-in-charge Jayson, Rev. Fr. Vic Labao of Kabilin Nature Farms Foundation, and Benjo Labuca, project chair of the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Metro Cebu Uptown in the press conference.
Pastor Macky Padayogdog of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, who was also present during the press conference, said that members from 43 organizations and fraternities are expected to join them in the bamboo-planting activity.
On Saturday, Lozano said that the group will plant bamboos and trees in the river banks of Combado-Lusaran, the river that stretches from Asturias’ Barangays San Isidro, Ubogon, and Tag-amakan down to the Barangays of Nangka, Biasong, Cabagdalan, Liki and Cantuod in Balamban.
Planting activity is from 5 to 9 a.m.
He said the Sept. 22 bamboo-planting is already the second year that the Capitol has joined in the celebration.
Last year, Capitol and its partners planted 2,000 bamboos and other trees. (Cebu Provincial Government PR)
