Cañete Ready For Mandaue Mayoralty Bid
A neophyte politician from the academe is already sure of launching his candidacy for Mandaue City Mayoralty bid in 2016 elections.
Dr. Paulus Cañete, the owner and administrator of Mandaue City College, on Wednesday said he decided to take the opportunity being endorsed by all his relatives in the sixth district.
“I could not neglect my relatives’ request for me to vie the mayoralty post in Mandaue whom I used to have an uncle mayor, the Consolacion’s former vice mayor was also my uncle, even the present mayor of Consolacion is also so close to me in consanguinity”, Cañete said.
Cañete, however, did not specify the date and time of launching his candidacy but said he will do this probably during the campaign period to be set by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) prior to the 2016 elections.
He said that he may fight big names in politics in Mandaue, like the Ouanos and Quisumbings. But Cañete said he is not afraid to face them, but will challenge them squarely.
The councilor daughter of Provincial Board member Thadeus Ouano is now molded for the mayoralty race in Mandaue City, so do with incumbent sixth district congressman Miguel Quisumbing in the same position but with separate political parties.
Both of them have experience on handling leadership in the government compared to Cañete who rose from the academe whose expertise are limited to solve school and students related problems.
Cañete considered his leadership in the academe as a good guide for him to lead Mandaue City people as a whole.
Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes who is in his last term will join the congressional race in the coming elections.
“So this seemingly be a fight between Goliath and David, wherein both Quisumbing and Ouano are considered as Goliath while me being a neophyte is considered as David”, Cañete said.
Cañete is now gathering all the requirements needed for the registration of “Ako Medya” Party list group.
This after he got assurance from all media groups in Cebu and Mindanao for their support of this Ako Medya party list which apparently emanates here in Cebu. Cañete said he will hold a general convention of all media groups in Cebu from radio, newspaper, and television including all their crews to select the best personalities to represent the Ako Medya party list in congress.
“We need one representative each from radio, television and print, the persons who have the capacity to handle responsibilities in the law making and other congressional duties and obligations”, Cañete emphasized.
As embodied in the party list law, a political party will obtain a seat in Congress after garnering 2 per cent among the total number of the regional voters.
Cañete said he was bothered by the real status of media members wherein some of them died in mendicancy situation due to lack of proper laws that care these personalities.
“Some of our media colleagues died without gaining any support from the government due to lack of representations in congress, so their legacies also died with them”, Cañete said.
Meanwhile, Cañete is scheduled to operate next week his radio station, DYPC FM, a 1,000 kilowatage transmission enough to cover the whole sixth district.
He said he will put up this radio outlet (with PC as not Paulus Cañete but public concern) not only to help boost his mayoralty candidacy, but to be par with all existing other FM stations which entertain and inform the public as well, and most of all for business means.
