BSP Releases Mauve P100 Bill; Blue Notes Still In Circulation

Even with the mauve-colored P100 bills now in circulation, the New Generation Currency (NGC) 100-peso bank notes in blue are still acceptable.

“At present, we have two colors of 100-peso bills circulating. As of now, you may still use the blue 100-peso bills,” said BSP Cebu Regional Director Leonides Sumbi in a press conference here.

Early this year, BSP started issuing the mauve 100-peso notes after complaints from the public that the original NGC 100-peso bills in blue color can be often and easily confused with the similarly colored P1,000 bills.

Sumbi said their office has received reports that the mauve bill was not accepted in a sari-sari store.

“There was a mauve 100-peso NGC bill that was not accepted by a sari-sari store, and it was a police officer who reportedly confirmed that it was counterfeit because it was the first time that they saw the mauve bill,” explained Sumbi.

The BSP official said that the blue 100-peso notes are still circulating as central bank still has a stock of the bills and continue to receive new issues from their printing plant.

“Although we have stopped printing the blue bills, we already have a lot of them in our cash department. We still have a lot of the printed blue bills in our printing plant that were already printed before we started printing the mauve,” she said.

“Eventually we will be moving on to the mauve color, and it will be the new P100,” Sumbi added. (rmn/PIA7-Cebu)
