British Prime Minister Resigns After Brexit Vote

Over 17.4 million Britons voted on Thursday to leave the European Union. Meanwhile, about 16.1 million voted to remain.

Prime Minister David Cameron, who led the campaign to remain in the bloc, announced that he planned to step down by October. He defended this by saying that the country deserved a leader better committed to deliver the will of the people, represented by the vote.

“I will do everything I can as prime minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months. But I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination.

The initial polls showed that the vote could go either way. But nonetheless, the final vote shocked the country.
