The Cebu Provincial Government warned barangay captains in the Province of Cebu not to take advantage of the distribution of passes for use during the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia called the public to report to her if barangay captains resort to illegal acts, so that she can take action.

“I am calling the public. Tagai kog pangan sa kapitan og unsa nga barangay. Tagai kog klaro nga ebidensiya kay ako mismo maoy mo-file og charges,” she said in a press conference on Tuesday, March 31.

Garcia disclosed that she received reports of some barangay captains in the province being selective in giving quarantine passes.

“Sa mga kapitan, ayaw na ninyo buhata kay liable gyud mo. Kamo gyud gipangita ni Secretary Año,” she said. Barangay captains were allegedly asking for a voter’s identification cards before issuing the passes.

Garcia said now is not the time for politicking as there is a time for that during elections.

“Kini ron di ni kabahin if botante ba or dili. Karun kabahin sa panginahanglan,” she said.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año warned that they will go after “abusive” local government units and barangay captains who will take advantage of the ECQ.

If the illegal act is proven, Año said these public officials will be sanctioned. (SN)
